Winter 23/24
Emerging from the escalators at Tottenham Court Road, we’re greeted by crowds of sale-shoppers and a sky like cold porridge. Then, a flash of colour, just visible behind a corner of concrete.
“Can we go and see what that is?”
My brother and his girlfriend are visiting from New Zealand and we’re being tourists for the day.
We zig-zag across the busy pavement and walk into a giant kaleidoscope. Passersby are leaning back their heads, smiling up at the hypnotic shapes moving across the ceiling, and snapping photos of the colourful artwork projected all around.
My brother and his girlfriend say it’s cool. I almost don’t say anything… but in the end I can’t help myself.
“I worked on the copy for this,” I tell them proudly and immediately feel daft.
But it’s not daft to be proud of the projects you’ve worked on.
I helped creative studio Pixel Artworks and artist Rupert Newman with this copy about 18 months ago. The artwork consists of three separate experiences and each one needed a name and a description. I’m glad to see that their beautiful immersive piece is still being enjoyed by the public. (As of January 2023, it’s showing at various times throughout the day at The Outernet.)
I always get a thrill when I spot projects I’ve worked on IRL. It reminds me how much I love my job… and it’s really handy for explaining to my family what I do every day.
